Annual Appeal 2017/18 – Every Child, Every Day
MBEF grants to our schools exceed $6 million this year. Our Annual Appeal is the primary source of funding for these grants, and without generous donations from parents and community members, our schools would look dramatically different. Imagine our schools with no librarians, no science specialists, no music program, no MakersSpace, no P.E. teachers, no counselors – imagine our schools without MBEF.

This year we must raise $5.2 million through our Annual Appeal to continue the programs we currently fund. We have just under $2 million still to raise and need the support of every family in our District to reach our goal. MBEF is truly grateful for those who have contributed to our current Appeal. Special thanks to our Lead Annual Appeal Donors who have donated $5,000 or more. Check the complete list of All Annual Appeal Donors if you are not sure if you have participated yet. Please Give Today!

Recognizing and Responding to Teen Stressors and Pressures
Last week more than 125 parents learned our teens' biggest stressors and how to help them manage. Dr. Nicole Wesley, Director of Student Services at Redondo Beach Unified School District, moderated the panel of two local counselors who work with teens, a parent and a student. Much of what was discussed can be found on the South Bay Families Connected featured page on Helping Your Kid Cope with Stress and Anxiety.  Check out the Statistics on our Beach Cities Teens and the Teen Video where MCHS and RUHS students share what stresses them out, how they cope and how parents can help. The Families Connected Speaker Series is presented through a partnership between South Bay Families Connected, Beach Cities Health District, MBUSD, HBCSD, and RBUSD. This panel discussion was also part of the MBMS Get PUMPEd Series learn about more upcoming events here.

Proud Supporters
Show your support of our local schools by displaying an MBEF lawn sign or car magnet. Lawn signs are available at each school site and the new car magnet will be mailed upon receipt of your donation or pledge. For your convenience, we will Deliver the MBEF Lawn Sign to your home or place of business if you prefer. This is a great way to display your support and encourage others to join this important effort.

  Pier to Pier

Pier to Pier Friendship Walk – Sunday, October 29
Join your friends, neighbors, and classmates at the annual SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk, a fun community event that supports our public schools and children with special needs. Last year the SKECHERS Foundation donated $130,000 to MBEF for our community-wide participation. This funding supports the many MBEF funded programs and educators in our schools. The Walk also provides assistance to The Friendship Foundation, an organization that brings companionship and recreational opportunities to students with special needs.

Please join one of the teams listed below, and designate MBEF as the beneficiary so your donation supports Manhattan Beach public schools. If you're unable to attend, please consider being a virtual walker. All donations will be generously matched by SKECHERS.

Families Connected Speaker Series: A Holocaust Survivor's Story – Tuesday, November 7
Rita Lurie was a five-year-old living in Poland when she and 14 other members of her family went into hiding from the Nazis. What they thought would be a week or two in an attic turned into almost two years. Rita will share her life before, during and after the Holocaust. She and her daughter, Leslie Gilbert-Lurie, will explore the legacies of the Holocaust for future generations, including children of Holocaust survivors or second-generation survivors. Leslie will share the impact of history on her own identity and perspectives, and on her own daughter, Mikaela, in the memoir "Bending Toward the Sun” that she co-wrote with her mother. To learn their story, join us on November 7th at 6:30pm in the Multi-Purpose Room at MBMS. The event is free, but registration is required. Register here. This event is also part of the MBMS Get PUMPEd Series learn about more upcoming events here.

Learn More About College Testing – Saturday, November 30
Please join us for a presentation on college admission testing provided by nationally-recognized speaker Adam Ingersoll. The evolving college admission testing landscape has far-reaching implications, both for public schools and for individual students. Our speaker comes to us from Compass Education Group, however, he will not be presenting his company’s services. All attendees will leave with a better understanding of the college admission process and a framework for maximizing the student’s success on standardized tests. More information on the presentation here.
