More Manhattan Wine Auction Tickets Available!
The place to be on Saturday, June 8th this year is celebrating at the 25th Anniversary of the Manhattan Wine Auction with our community. Access to the Reserve Room is sold out, but there are a limited number of General Admission tickets available. Click here to grab tickets before they are gone! Help raise money for our schools while enjoying samplings from over 40 of the finest local restaurants and specialty food purveyors, wine from 80 distinguished wineries, distilleries and breweries, live and silent auctions, and dancing under the stars.

Highlights from the Live Auction this year include a majestic wine getaway to Tuscany; a retreat to the stunning Ritz-Carlton in Maui for golf, sun and white, sand beaches; the Chairman’s Emeritus private dining experience at 71Above with panoramic views of downtown LA from 71 floors up, and, of course, exclusive and unattainable wines from Napa Valley and beyond.

The first Wine Auction was prompted by the need to create a sustainable source of funding for our schools...and to have lots of fun doing it. A few ambitious individuals brought it all together in a matter of weeks, creating what is now a momentous and unforgettable event every year. Today, 25 years later, the need for supplemental funding for education continues to challenge our community and the Manhattan Wine Auction is just as important as ever in the mission to strengthen education in Manhattan Beach. We can't wait to celebrate with you!

Math....It Adds Up to Success!
Math is becoming increasingly important to our future, as jobs evolve to include more analysis and technology. Any current list of top jobs in the U.S. is full of occupations that involve STEM (science, technology, engineering, math). MBUSD is meeting this challenge by developing math enrichment opportunities for our students with programs like Math Olympiad. This year, under the guidance of Lisa Tanita, Teacher on Special Assignment, all five elementary schools had robust Math Olympiad programs with 4th and 5th-grade mathletes working on challenging math problems on a regular basis. Mental Health Awareness Month
With stress and anxiety on the rise, mental health is something we all should pay close attention to. Talking about our mental health will help eliminate some of the stigma associated with it – and May is the month to start the dialogue if you haven't already. We are fortunate to have resources in our community like the Beach Cities Health District to offer support. Please check out their helpful tips on knowing the signs and their events to support mental health awareness this month.

3D Printing Brings Engineering Projects to Life at Costa
Leanne Weaver, Technology and Engineering Lead Teacher at MCHS, has found success with one of MBEF’s Teachers Driving Innovation (TDI) Grants. The TDI Grants Committee approved a 3D Printer this year and the Honors Engineering Design and Development students have been able to further refine their projects by printing multiple prototypes of their designs. The impact of the grant is reaching beyond the Engineering Department – a Physiology teacher printed a heart model for students to examine, and even the Solar Boat Club got in on the fun printing a working wrench to help build the structure. Ms. Weaver has learned that the versatility of the 3D Printer makes the possibilities unlimited. She hopes this project paves the way for integrating more technology into the classroom districtwide.

World Peace Game – Opportunities to Stretch Boundaries
MakerSpace Instructional Assistant, Crista Riccio, received an MBEF grant this year to conduct the renowned World Peace Game at Meadows Elementary. The Game encourages participants to develop high-level skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, introspection, social-emotional intelligence, and much more. Ms. Riccio, along with the parents and students, was so impressed by the experience that she secured a World Peace Game camp for students in grade 4-7 this summer in Manhattan Beach. MBUSD teachers will be observing the camp and learning from John Hunter, the mastermind behind the game, on how to incorporate the Game into their classrooms. Sign up now for an unforgettable 5-day summer camp and be a part of World Peace. Register online here.

Congratulations to the MBUSD Teachers of the Year
Each year MBUSD recognizes one teacher from each school site and one of these teachers is selected as the district-wide Teacher of the Year. Thanks to an MBEF grant made possible by an endowment fund sponsored by Katy and Robert Nickell, all seven Teachers of the Year receive a monetary award. Please join us in celebrating these exceptional teachers who do so much for our children at the next MBUSD Board meeting on June 5th at 6:30pm at the District Office.

Local artists, student artists, and community members joined together and sold one-of-a-kind pieces to benefit the visual arts program. Artwork by Evgeniya Bozhko won the People's Choice Award and Best in Show was given to Linden Royea (both shown left). Check out the entire collection here.

Yikes! We have a Middle Schooler in the House!
The transition from elementary school to middle school is the biggest shift that our children will face during their K-12 education path. There is so much that is different – the size of the campus, the number of students in each class, the accessibility of teachers, how lessons are implemented, expectations of students, and the interaction with families. Not to mention the emotional ups-and-downs of a typical teen! As a parent, you can help support your fifth grader transition to MBMS by joining Margot Parker, MA, counselor and prior MBMS administrator, on Wednesday, May 15th, 6:30 - 8:00pm in the MPR at MBMS for an engaging, hands-on discussion, filled with insights, strategies, and tips to prepare for the upcoming transition. Register online here.
