Inaugural Year of Teachers Driving Innovation Grants Off to a Promising Start
By Mrs. Joanne Michael, Science Specialist - Meadows School
Three years ago, I had a dream—I wanted to work with my students to send a balloon into the edge of space. Not knowing how to fund it, or really how to do it in the first place, I tried writing grants, getting sponsors, talking to aerospace companies—nothing. In the fall of 2015, the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation (MBEF) began a new grant program for teachers—the "Teachers Driving Innovation Grants"—to give teachers an opportunity to go a bit "outside the box", in the interest of inspiring kids or pushing them out of their comfort zones. I knew this was my chance—if my goal was to be achieved, it had to be through this grant. Read more...

Understanding the MBEF Endowment
We often receive questions about our Endowment: Why does MBEF need to raise money when we have an Endowment? Where is my donation most needed – the Annual Appeal or Endowment? Why can’t we take funding from the Endowment to support this year’s Annual Appeal shortfall? While both MBEF and the MBEF Endowment support quality public education here in Manhattan Beach, each does so differently. Read More...

  The Path to Higher Education

The Path to College
Almost 1000 South Bay parents and students came together on a Saturday afternoon last month to hear Frank Bruni, author of “Where You Go Is Not Who’ll You Will Be,” speak about the college admissions process. Given that stress levels among students, particularly high school, is a subject of concern among parents and educators on a national level, the large number of attendees wasn’t surprising.   Real Estate Partners

New at MBEF: The Real Estate Partner Program
Earlier this month, MBEF introduced the Real Estate Partner Program in the South Bay. We know that the quality of a school system has a direct impact on a local real estate market. From the Distinguished Elementary Schools to the Blue Ribbon Middle and High Schools, our schools attract informed and professional buyers looking to settle in a town ideal for families. MBEF now offers agents, developers and brokers the opportunity to market themselves to our broad base of well-educated and invested parents. If you work in the real estate sector or know someone who would appreciate this unique opportunity to be part of the MBEF Real Estate Partner Program, please contact the MBEF office at 310-303-3342. We have special benefits available for partners who sign up before June 1, 2016.

  Fresh Brothers

Fresh Brothers Pizza for 11th Grade Testing
During the upcoming SBAC testing at Mira Costa High School in May, MBEF Business Partner, Fresh Brothers, will be providing pizza to juniors at lunch. Last year, many juniors opted out of the testing which had a negative impact on our District. It is important for students to do well on tests in the 11th grade because (1) It is used as a placement exam for CSU and some UCs, (2) It reflects on our District and our reputation—which will impact college acceptance, and (3) Our District will not be able to get out of "Program Improvement" status until we increase the number of students who are taking the test. We encourage all juniors to take the tests, do their best, and enjoy the pizza! Thank you, Fresh Brothers!

  MBMS Odyssey Team

MBMS Odyssey of the Mind Team advances to World Final Championships!
Back in September, students from MBMS, Pacific, Pennekamp, and Robinson formed Odyssey of the Mind teams. For six months, students worked on creating solutions to different long term problems. Embracing the foundational precept of Odyssey of the Mind, “No Outside Assistance”, teams envisioned, brainstormed and began creating their solutions. Students drafted, revised and edited scripts; designed, built and improved vehicles, mechanical props and moving costume elements; created, troubleshot, revamped and let their artistic abilities shine on sets and backdrops; designed and hand-made elaborate costumes and props, and grappled with engineering and physics.
