Just 10 Days to Go!
We are counting down the days to the end of the 2017/18 Annual Appeal and we're just $423,000 from our goal of $5 million. We are grateful to our generous community and parents for getting us this far. MBEF's Annual Appeal is the primary source of funding, and without a meaningful donation from every family, our schools would look dramatically different. Please donate or pledge today  – don't wait until our programs are cut.

Special thanks to our Lead Annual Appeal Donors who have donated $5,000 or more. If you are not sure if you have participated in the Annual Appeal this year, please check here

The College Road Map: Finding Your Way to the Right College  – Tuesday, May 22nd
The college admissions process can be daunting . . . What is the applications process like today? What are colleges looking for in their applicants?  What are some best practices every high school parent should be aware of? How can you improve the probability of your child getting into the college of his or her choice? And what is the “best” choice for your child? Our speaker, Bob Patterson, has worked in college admissions for 18 years. He has read and made decisions on over 100,000 applications at public and private universities, including the University of Pittsburgh, University of North Carolina, UC Berkeley and Stanford, where he served as Director of Admissions. Mr. Patterson will share his thoughts on these questions and more so that your child can better navigate the college admissions process and better position themselves for acceptance to college that is right for them. Save the date of Tuesday, May 22nd at 6pm in the MCHS Auditorium  – registration will be offered in a future communication.

We Want Your Opinion Today – Survey Closes Thursday!
P.E. or Music? Counseling or Small Class Size? What is your priority? MBEF's goal is to align our strategy with the priorities of parents and teachers. Please refer to the chart to the left for the current breakdown of program funding in our schools.

The MBEF Parent Survey is critical to our strategic direction and should only take 5-10 minutes of your time. Our target is 100% participation and the feedback you provide is anonymous. The survey will close on Thursday, February 1, 2018. Take the MBEF Parent Survey now to make your feedback count.

Reading: Creating Meaningful Conversations
By Michelle Syverson, MBUSD Literacy TOSA

Ms. Syverson shares her enthusiasm for literacy in the article below. You can experience her passion and learn your own tips for fostering a love of reading at her workshop on February 15 – Engaging Your Child with Meaningful Conversations About Reading.

Growing readers and writers is one of my passions. There is a magic to the experience of watching reading and writing come to life. Witnessing growth, forming connections, and developing understanding are just a few pieces to this puzzle we call literacy. In 2010, MBUSD adopted the workshop method/pedagogy for reading and writing as a signature practice. I was on board from the start and eager to use this instructional practice in my classroom and learn all it had to offer. Read more here.

Families Connected Speaker Series: Purpose vs. Performance – Thursday, February 8th
With the norm being a mix of extracurricular activities, multiple honors & AP classes, and highly competitive sports teams, the typical student seems to be diligently checking the boxes for a successful future from an early age. But are our kids taking the time to think about who they want to be when they grow up, instead of just what they want to be? Hear from former Dodger Eric Karros and his daughter, Mikah Maly-Karros, on how to shift your family mindset away from one focused singularly on outcomes to more purposeful experiences at this event presented by Beach Cities Health District and South Bay Families Connected. Register here.
